16. EARTHWORKS

EARTHWORKS, also known as Land Art, Earth Art, or Environmental Art, emerged in the 1960's and 1970's. Earthworks are fabricated in and with the landscape, becoming inseparable from this geographic site. Due to the possibility of erosion, earthworks are considered ephemeral (short lived) and are sometimes exclusively preserved in the photographic document. This type of work resists the commodification of the transportable object.
